Employment tribunal rules to change New rules designed to streamline the employment tribunal process are set to come into force this summer. Employment Relations Minister Jo Swinson announced the measures on 14 March in its response to a 2011 review of the rules of procedure for employment tribunals. more Auto-enrolment set to become more ‘user-friendly’ Proposals to improve the automatic enrolment process have been published by the Department for Work and Pensions. Feedback received from employers, payroll service providers and the pensions sector since the roll-out of automatic enrolment into workplace schemes began last October has helped to shape a consultation launched by the department on 25 March. more Going online makes VAT easy, says HMRC Tax chiefs are urging new businesses that need to register for VAT to do it online. HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) said on 11 March that registering for VAT online was easier, more secure and faster than using a paper form. more Tax relief set to help bosses manage sickness absence Businesses are to benefit from tax relief when they pay to help their employees return to work after sickness. Employers will receive tax relief on expenditure of up to £500 on support such as specialist equipment or treatment that has been recommended by a new health and work assessment and advisory service. more Employers urged to tighten up on personal device use Employers are being urged to be less relaxed about employers who use a personal laptop, tablet computer or smartphone for work and could be placing people’s personal information at risk. A YouGov survey commissioned by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) found that 47 per cent of all UK adults now use their personal smartphone, laptop or tablet computer for work purposes, an approach known as bring your own device (BYOD). more
